For millions of years, humans have not needed to rely on gyms, fitness gadgets, or strict diets in order to maintain or obtain physical health and wellbeing, but now, in modern day, we have strayed so far from our original ways of living that we believe our health to be dependent on them. Clearly, our bodies have evolved to perform optimally without the use of the many fitness products that now swamp the consumer market. But in this changing world, our society's reliance on technology, supermarkets, and wheeled transportation has brought us to a point where every day life doesn't provide us with enough activity to maintain a balance between consumed energy and expended energy. It is this imbalance that causes excesses fat to build and our bodies to malfunction after years of trying to cope with the excess calories. We must therefore find a way to bring balance back to our energy input and output if optimal health and fitness is our goal.
Our quest for fitness should ideally provide us with the most effective and convenient method of correcting this imbalance. Fortunately, the answer is surprisingly simple; unfortunately, the solution is understood and applied by few. The mainstream public's ignorance concerning this issue is the reason for the huge demand for the endless and nearly, if not completely, useless fitness gimmicks. One thing we can be certain of, for millions of years our ancestors have maintained their physical strength and wellbeing without the use of any fitness tools. While some are useful to achieve and maintain fitness, it is ridiculous to think that any of them are necessary. Whether it was evolution or design that has brought us to this point, the only tool we need to maintain the body is the body itself. Inactivity not only prevents energy or calories to be expended, it causes us to lose our number one ally in the struggle for caloric balance- muscle. Muscle requires calories to maintain itself even while you sleep. Building extra muscle will force your body to use more calories, in order to fuel that extra lean body mass, even while at rest. This is a key element to providing us with long-term caloric balance. Building and maintaining muscle is essential to our fitness goals. If muscle is essential to providing caloric balance, it seems reasonable to define the most efficient and effective fitness activities as those that allow us to burn the most calories possible in the shortest time possible while building muscle.
